Workflow Innovations: Strengthen Fair Trade Towns with fair Tourism

BRINGING THE NEEDS OF CONSUMERS AND PRODUCERS TOGETHER: SHOWCASING FAIR TRADE INNOVATION

In this workflow, innovations and new approaches are presented to support producers on their way to sustainability. A better connection of producers and consumers will increase the willingness to pay a fair and decent price without sacrificing the natural resources.

People want to travel more sustainable after Covid-19. How can we use the power and network of Fair Trade Towns to make it happen?

«Prior to the pandemic, Travel & Tourism (…) accounted for 1 in 4 of all new jobs created across the world, 10.6% of all jobs (334 million), and 10.4% of global GDP (US$9.2 trillion)» according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. The economic benefits of the tourism industry are impressiv, but the ecological and cultural damage is high and the working conditions are often precarious.

In this workflow, we like to discuss how the partner hotels and restaurants in the Fair Trade Towns can attract more sustainability-minded guests from other Fair Trade Towns and from home and abroad. In this way, we can also contribute to better working conditions in tourism.

Jon Andrea Florin, director of fairunterwegs (fairjourney), will introduce us on how tourism can be made fair and what market potential fair tourism has. Fair Trade Town has the chance to foster the change towards a responsible tourism. In the co-creation we will brainstorm ideas on how to promote accredited restaurants, hotels and other Fair Trade Town offerings to travellers. And how to motivate travellers to use those fair options.
